Chapter Sixteen

The next morning, I woke to a blissful heat against my bare back. The alarm hadn’t buzzed yet, so I simply lay there, soaking in Terrence’s warmth and the relaxed way his body molded to mine. His chest rose and fell gently, and his arm draped over my side in a perfect imitation of intimacy. I’d never been more content in my life.

My phone screeched, and Terrence jumped from deep sleep.

I rolled over and pressed the kill switch, then settled back into his arms.

“Morning,” he mumbled, his lips beginning to nuzzle the back of my neck. “Sleep well?”

“Best night’s sleep I’ve ever had.”

He scoffed, and the heat of his breath hit my skin. “Trying to butter me up? Didn’t you learn your lesson yesterday? No funny business in the mornings. We’ll have to save it for later today.” He placed a chaste kiss to my neck, then rolled over me to get out of bed.

I groaned at his departure, but he was right. I needed breakfast or else I could faint again. We did our morning routine, him in the shower first while I brushed my teeth and shaved the little stubble that grew from my chin. Then we switched places. I saw just a hint of his luscious body before he had a towel wrapped around his waist.

“Move it,” he said, bumping my hip with his.

I vacated the sink and, after stripping off my clothes, climbed into the shower.

At breakfast, Omar and Laura waved to us as we entered. “Mind if we sit with them?” I asked.

Terrence raised his eyebrow. “What if I said yes?”

“Then we’d sit by ourselves.”

He shook his head, a small smile on his lips. “What if I meant I wanted to sit with my friends?”

“Oh. That’s…that’s fine. You can do whatever you want, of course.” I was babbling, and I knew it.

Terrence lifted my hand into his and locked our fingers. “Collin, I’m trying to make a joke. What’s gotten into you today?”

With our hands joined, he gave me a tug and led me to the table where my classmates sat.

“Morning,” Terrence greeted cheerfully. “Lovely day.”

Omar side-eyed him, but Laura nodded enthusiastically. “I can’t wait till it cools down,” she said and fanned herself with her hand. “You’re from here, right? Will the weather change soon?”

I stared at her. This was too hot? Already, I thought of keeping an extra jacket to cover my blazer in the evenings. Of course, she was from Canada, which was a far cry from the heat and humidity of Florida.

“Usually by the end of September it’s chilly. But it likely won’t get as cold as you’re hoping. The water keeps the air warm enough to prevent snow most of the time.”

Laura pouted. “No skiing, then?”

“There’re a couple places close by you can get to. Nothing too spectacular, though.”

The two of them fell into an easy conversation about likely spots. With them distracted, I turned to Omar, who was still glaring at Terrence.

“I’m going to grab our breakfasts. Can I get you a refill?” I gestured to his paper coffee cup.
